The Hospital del Mar which serves Ciutat Vella and Sant Martí districts with about 250.000 residents, will be doubled in size and, therefore, will be able to accommodate more patients, as there was an agreement signed between the mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, and the minister of health for the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, Marina Geli to invest 42 million euros in the extension of the hospital. According to the mayor’s words, the agreement is one of the steps towards Improvement of the Barcelona health services, as a result of which there will be a better use of public resources and it will be easier to cope with the growing needs of the 21 century, such as the increasing birth rate and life expectancy of Barcelona residents. The project was created by the architects Pineda and Brullet and according to it, the current hospital building will be replaced with a new one, which will allow the increase in the number of normal and emergency beds, outpatients, consulting rooms, the maternity wing, surgeries and the Emergency Radiology Units. The project is to be finished by 2011.
