Lover’s Day and the World Day of Books
While the whole world celebrates St. Valentines Day, Spain also has another holiday for those in love – Lover’s Day, taking place April 23th, and also known as St George's Day. The tradition comes from the legend about the Saint, who killed a dragon and a rose germinated from a drop of his blood that had fallen on the ground. That rose was given to a princess – this is the reason why on Lover’s Day women are given roses as a sign of love and tenderness. At the same time, 23rd of April is the World Day of books, and especially the book of a famous Spanish writer – Miguel de Cervantes – on this day, his world-known novel, "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha", was published, which became the second most widely read book after the Bible. Men are therefore often presented with books which can be bought in any city’s corner.
