La Mercè, Barcelona
Barcelona joins the other European cities in their autumn festivities. This week, September 18th – 24th, the city celebrates la Mercè to honour Barcelona’s patroness, Mare de Deu de la Mercè. The holiday was introduced in 1902 and is now celebrated every year to say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn. The choice of events is extensive – there are fireworks, open-air dancing, music performances, costumed performances and what not.
