The numbers of foreigners visiting Spain grew by 6% 2005 year to reach 55.57 million visitors, which represents the most rapid annual growth rate since 1999, according to figures made public today by the Industry, Tourism and Commerce ministry. With 14 million visitors, the most popular region was Cataluņa (Barcelona), followed by the Balearic Islands (9.6 million), the Canary Islands (9.4 million) and Andalucia (8 million). By visitor nationality, the UK topped the list with 16.1 million, followed by France (8.7 million) and Germany (9.9 million). It is believed that the introduction into the market of a growing number of discount airline operators has benefited the sector as a whole, and Cataluņa in particular. Total spending during the year grew by 4.5%.
